We categorized the purpose of marriage in Islam into 3 prime aspects.

1. Physical Aspect
2. Spiritual Aspect
3. Physical Aspect

1.   Physical Aspect

– Sexual Demand

No matter how successful a person becomes, he/she will still feel emptiness in their hearts, longing for someone whom they love or want to get closer. That’s why Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said in a hadith –

“There is nothing like marriage for two who love one another.”

And even if a person does not have someone whom he/she likes or loves, still at some point in his/her life, this person will feel lonely. This person would want someone to hold hands or give a tight hug or feel something more physical (sexual).

This is the most common and visible purpose for which a boy and girl get married. They both have physical needs, we may say desire to be intimate, and marriage is a halal way of fulfilling this sole purpose.

Allah SWT says in the Quran –

“And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy.” [Surat Ar-Rūm 30;21]

This verse indicates that two people get married to seek comfort in each other through halal means.

2.   Spiritual Aspect

In this aspect, there are several elements.

– Seeking Allah’s Pleasure

Marriage is one of the ways to attain Allah’s SWT pleasure and reward. When two people have a chance of living together and fulfilling their desires in a haram way, but they choose to get married following Islamic Shariah, keep their commitment remembering Allah SWT, they get rewarded for that marriage bonding.

– Marriage is Sunnah

Marriage, according to our Prophet Muhammad, is his sunnah and half of deen. So, before getting married, if someone makes his/her intention that the marriage thing is for following the sunnah, then the couple will be rewarded.

They will do things in their marriage ceremony according to the sunnah, and live with each other following the teachings of Prophet ﷺ.

– Getting Reward for Intimacy

As both the husband and wife are fulfilling their sexual urge through a halal way, they will be rewarded for their intimacy.

– Helping Each Other In Righteousness

In marital life, there will be ups and downs. They will remind each other of their religious duties. Even when someone slightly falls for any haram stuff, the spouse will remind him/her to fear Allah, and remind about the promises Allah made in the Quran.

– Protecting Each Other From Haram and Fahsha Things

In this age of mass fitnah, it is quite difficult for a person to keep him or her modest. It becomes easier for a married couple to deal with such a fitnah.

Especially for a man who has to go outside for seeking rizq, he will feel much easier to control his desire for falling dua to his modest wife in the house.

His wife will give her mental and most importantly physical comfort, which will be a huge positive power for the husband to overcome fitnah that has to do with looking at non mahrams with desire.

3.   Social Aspect

Marriage plays a huge impact on social lives. Some of its impactful elements of marriage on societies are –

– Creates Responsible Families

When a man and woman get married, they have some social duties to take care of.

Almost all societies have certain rules and regulations to ensure their well-being. A newlywed couple strictly adheres to those rules. They act more responsibly when it comes to handle anything serious that has an impact on the society.

If does not mean Muslim couples do not have family problems within themselves. But, they can work on it more effectively following the teachings of Islam.

– Creates Strong Bonding

When two or multiple families live in an area, they tend to create some sort of social bonding among themselves. For this kind of bonding, they give priority to other people’s interests in many cases.

From a religious point of view, the rights of neighbors are taken care of more seriously.

– Increasing the Number of Ummah

In a hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that he would feel proud seeing great numbers of this ummah in the day of judgment –

“...I will be proud of your great numbers before the other nations.”

Islam highly encourages young individuals to marry someone who can give birth to many kids. And this can be identified from her family and relatives. This is a key purpose of Nikah.

So, when a couple tries to conceive, and finally give birth to a baby, this would be a reason for our Prophet to be proud of if this baby grows up with Iman, and die as a Muslim.

Apart from making our Prophet ﷺ proud, a large number of kids resembles the strength of a family. Also, for a society and a nation, a great number of skilled and well-educated populations will be a reason for great prosperity.

All above mentioned aspects are no less important than husband’s rights and duties and wife’s rights and duties in Islam.
