Can We Touch Private Parts During Fasting?

Fasting, one of the most essential acts of devotion in Islam, requires abstaining from food, drink, and other worldly desires from dawn till dusk. As Muslims worldwide engage in this spiritual practice, questions often arise about the boundaries of permissible actions during the sacred month of Ramadan.

A commonly asked question is, “Can we touch private parts during fasting without invalidating it?”

According to Islamic Sharia, engaging in intimate acts such as touching private parts during fasting is generally permissible but highly discouraged. This is due to the potential risks of leading to full intercourse or the release of semen, both of which would invalidate the fast.

Can We Touch Private Parts During Fasting

Regarding touching private parts during fasting, there are certain precautions that we need to keep in mind to maintain the sanctity of worship.

When there is a fear of violating prohibitions such as sexual intercourse or ejaculation, the husband and wife should refrain from touching their private parts while fasting. This is because fasting is all about maintaining self-control and avoiding actions that may compromise the sanctity of worship.

If ejaculation occurs, the fast is invalidated, and the individual should solely observe qadha (make up for missed fasts) without incurring kaffarah (penalty). However, the person is required to abstain from eating for the remainder of the day and compensate for the missed fast on that particular day.

A hadith found in Sahih Muslim 1106d states that ‘A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:

“Allah’s Messenger (S) used to kiss (his wives) while fasting and embraced (them) while fasting; but he had the greatest mastery over his desire among you.”

This serves as a basis for the general guidance that permits a husband to enjoy intimacy with his wife during fasting as long as there is no intercourse or ejaculation.

Muslim couples are encouraged to exercise self-control over their desires to avoid situations that may lead to a loss of control.

It is recommended to delay intimate acts until nighttime, especially for young couples recently married. Developing self-discipline and awareness of self-desires during fasting involves consciously understanding the limitations.

Reflecting on the spiritual and moral objectives of fasting helps Muslims maintain focus and control over their desires. During a fast, seeking Allah’s guidance and help controlling desires fosters a connection with the divine and helps people maintain self-discipline.
