Raining Dua | Dua for Before, After and During Rain

Rain is among the most significant signs of Allah’s Mercy and Blessings. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has guided us to make Dua before, at the time, and after rain, as it is when Allah pours His blessings on us.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw rain, he would say: “Allahumma sayyiban nafi‘an” which means “O Allah, make it a beneficial downpour.”. Also, he used to say: “Allahumma sayyiban hanian (O Allah, (make it) a wholesome downpour).”

During rainy times, Muslims are encouraged to turn towards Allah and make beneficial supplications. As part of this article, we will discuss some other duas (before, during, and after) that can make for a beneficial downpour.

Dua for rain is a reminder of Allah’s Mercy and blessings that come in the rain. By reciting Dua, Muslims ask Allah to make the rain beneficial in every aspect.

1. Dua for Before Rain

Before the rain, seek the protection and mercy of Allah through the dua. You can recite:

اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا

Pronounce: “Allāhumma aghithnā, Allāhumma aghithnā, Allāhumma aghithnā.”

Meaning: “O Allah, send us rain. O Allah, send us rain. O Allah, send us rain.” [Al-Bukhari 1/224, Muslim 2/613.]

This dua is a way to ask Allah for His grace and mercy during rainfall so that it brings forth benefits and blessings for all. By reciting this dua, you acknowledge that rain is a gift from Allah and that you’re grateful for it.

2. Dua for During Rain

Raining Dua

We can also seek the blessings and mercy of Allah during rain by reciting the dua. During rainfall, it’s recommended to say the following dua:

اللّهُمَّ اسْقِـنا غَيْـثاً مُغيـثاً مَريئاً مُريـعاً نافِعـاً غَيْـرَ ضار عاجِـلاً غَـيْرَ آجِل

Pronounce: “Allāhumma ‘asqinā ghaythan mughīthan marī’an murī`a, nāfi`an ghayra ḍārr, `ājilan ghayra ājil.”

Meaning: “O Allah, shower upon us abundant rain, beneficial not harmful, swiftly and not delayed.” [Abu Dawud 1:303, See also Al-Albani SahihAbu Dawud 1/216.]

We can also recite the following dua during the rain,

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Pronounce:  “Allahumma sayyiban nafi’an”

Meaning: “O Allah, may it be a beneficial rain.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari:1032]

These duas are supplications to Allah, asking for rain that will benefit and bless the earth and its inhabitants. By reciting this dua, one acknowledges the power and authority of Allah over the natural elements and seeks His mercy and blessings.

3. Dua for After Rain

Dua for After Rain

After the rain has stopped, continue to seek the blessings of Allah by reciting the dua for beneficial rain. You can make the following dua:

اللّهُمَّ اسْقِ عِبادَكَ وَبَهـائِمَك وَانْشُـرْ رَحْمَـتَكَ وَأَحْيِي بَلَـدَكَ المَيِّـت

Pronounce: “Allāhumma’sqi `ibādaka wa bahā’imak. wanshur raḥmatak. wa aḥyi baladaka ‘l-mayyit”

Meaning: “O Allah, give water to Your slaves, and Your livestock, and spread Your mercy, and revive Your dead land.” [Abu Dawud 1/305. Al-Albani graded it good in Sahih Abu Dawud 1/218.]

This prayer is a way to express gratitude to Allah for the rain and to ask for its benefits to be spread far and wide. Also, this dua is a reminder that rain isn’t just a natural phenomenon but a mercy from Allah that brings life and sustenance to the earth.

What to Do When It’s Raining?

When it rains outside, it is highly recommended to expose yourself to the rain and allow some of it to drip over the body. This teaching comes from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as demonstrated during a rain shower.

As reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) in a hadith found in Muslim (898), the Messenger lifted part of his clothing to let rain fall on him. When asked why he did so, the Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) replied, “Because it has just come from its Lord, may He be glorified and exalted.”

Therefore, when it rains, one should take the opportunity to expose oneself to the blessings of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) and appreciate the beauty of His creation.

In addition to exposing yourself to the rain, other things can be done during rainy weather. You can engage in acts of worship, such as making dua or performing voluntary prayers.

Blessings of Rain: Seeking Allah’s Mercy and Protection

Rain is a blessing from Allah that should be appreciated. Muslims are encouraged to make dua for beneficial rain and seek Allah’s protection and blessings. It is an opportunity to connect with Allah and show gratitude for His mercy.

Whether before, during, or after the rain, dua should always be a part of our daily routine. The more we make dua, the closer we become to Allah and the more blessings we receive. So, let us make dua for rain that will benefit us and seek Allah’s mercy and protection.
