Allah Subhanahu Ta’ala forbids drinking alcohol by revealing the following verse in the Holy Qur’an.

“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” [Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:90]

So, your question might be, “Can Muslims drink alcohol?” instead of “Can Muslims drink alcohol during Ramadan?

In Islam, there is no place for drinking alcohol while fasting or at any other time.

Allah Makes Drinking Alcohol Haram in Different Steps

Allah Subhanahu Ta’ala prohibited drinking alcohol in 3 steps. Imam Ibn Kathir(may Allah keep him in peace) interpreted the entire thing in his Tafsir Ibn Kathir.

Imam Ahmad (may Allah keep him in peace) narrated on the authority of Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA), who said that alcohol is forbidden three times. When the Prophet (PBUH) arrived in Madinah, the people of Madinah were drinking alcohol and eating the wealth earned through gambling. When they asked the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) about that, Allah Ta’ala revealed the following verse.

“THEY ASK you about intoxicants and gambling. Say: “In both, there is great evil as well as some benefit for people, but the evil which they cause is greater than the benefit which they bring………” [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:219]

Allah Makes Drinking Alcohol Haram

Then people began to say that these two things have not been forbidden to us. They only said that in these two things, our benefit is less, and the damage is more. So they continued drinking. But one day, a Muhajir companion of the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) made a mistake while reciting the Holy Quran in Namaz (performing prayer) while intoxicated. Then, the following verse was revealed.

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Do not attempt to pray while you are drunk, [but wait] until you know what you are saying;…………….” [Surah An-Nisa, 4:43]

After revealing this verse, people abandoned drinking alcohol during prayer but still kept drinking alcohol outside of the prayers. This is because drinking alcohol was not prohibited strictly and precisely till then.

Later on, verse 90 of Surah Ma’idah revealed that Allah Subhanahu Ta’ala entirely forbade drinking alcohol.

Allah also says immediately after this verse that-

“By means of intoxicants and gambling, Satan seeks only to sow enmity and hatred among you and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from prayer. Will you not, then, desist?” [Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:91]

Sahih Hadith Against Drinking Alcohol

We have listed some authentic hadith that verified that all types of intoxicating objects are haram.

Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) said, “Every intoxicant is wine or liquor. And every intoxicant is haram. In another narration, every alcoholic beverage is haram. [1]

On the authority of ‘A’isha, ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud, Mu’awiyah, and Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them) who said: When the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) was asked about Surah Madhu, he said: “Every drink that is intoxicating is haram. In other words, every intoxicant is haram.” [2]

On the authority of Jabir bin ‘Abdullah, ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr, and ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) said: “Every intoxicating substance is haram and even a small amount of it is haram if the bigger portion is intoxicating.” [3]

On the authority of Nu’man bin Bashir (May Allah be pleased with him) who said, The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing of Allah be Upon Him) said: “Surely liquor is made from the juice of any fruit, especially from grapes, as well as raisins, dates, wheat, barley, and corn. And I certainly forbid you from taking every intoxicant. [4]

Consequences of Drinking Alcohol in the Afterlife

Every object or activity that Allah Subhanahu Ta’ala forbids has consequences both in the earthly and afterlife. We have listed the following authentic hadith of our beloved Prophet Muhammadur Rasulullah that show us the consequences of drinking alcohol.

On the authority of Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him), he said: “The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) cursed ten people regarding alcohol: the one who makes the wine, the original maker, the one who drinks it, the carrier, the one to whom it is carried, the one who makes others drink, the seller, the one who devours the profit, the buyer and for which the purchase is made.” [5]

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) said: “The habituated drug addict is equivalent to the idolater.[6]

On the authority of Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) said: “A habituated drug addict will not enter paradise.” [7]
